1, with elliptical roofs as the final design. It had been preceded by a series of shorter, 19’10", vans which were all scrapped by the LMS in 1924 and the earlier 25' boxes with arc roofs which had laid down the origin of this later design. The Knotty was advanced for its time, in providing the automatic vacuum brake for all of its vehicles, with at least some of the horseboxes having a through pipe for Westinghouse brakes for journeys over other companies’ lines and was also a pioneering Company which went direct from oil lighting to electric lighting for its coaching stock. All of the 1912 batch of horseboxes had electric lighting, although the disposition of the fittings on the vehicle has not yet been established with accuracy. The NSR adopted the J Stone & Co system of lighting which included a dynamo and dual battery switching method so that whilst one battery was being discharged in one direction, the other was receiving a recharge. In coaching stock, this equipment was carried under the guards compartment, with roof connections to all the coaches in the rake. it would follow that the horseboxes would of necessity require sole equipment, in view of their meanderings over other metals. NSR colouring was Madder Lake, unlined. Everything below the solebar would be painted black. Mansell wheels were usually fitted and these invariably had their wooden centres varnished brown. Roofs were white lead initially. Lettering was probably white. Numbering was 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 23, 24, 26. LMS numbers are not known except No 1 which became LMS 43722. This vehicle was withdrawn in 1932. An good photograph of one of the horseboxes in LMS condition is shown on page 29 of North Staffordshire Wagons by G F Chadwick, published by Wild Swan Publications Ltd ISBN 1 874103 15 1.
