Over 300 of these 16’ short horseboxes were built to what became the Southern Railway Dia.1000 between 1887 and 1907, all generally similar with detail differences, especially regarding the brake gear. Up until 1912, a single lever brake sufficed, occasionally through vacuum piped, then a cross shaft and lift link, ending up with full vacuum brake arrangements. Some had a through Westinghouse pipe added, and steam heating was also added to some.
The boxes were always oil lit, even the late survivors in BR days, and no end steps were ever fitted. After 1934, the beading started to be removed and the sides sheeted over, with the exception of the drop door. 138 vehicles passed to British Railways with the last being withdrawn in 1955.
LSWR numbering was not consecutive, 5651 to 6040 covers all bar one, with gaps for the 21’ horseboxes introduced at the turn of the century. Southern numbers were 2501 to 2819. The odd vehicle was LSWR 336 which was renumbered 5965, and became SR 2764, carrying S2764 in BR days.
Early livery was LSWR passenger brown with black running gear. After grouping SR coach green was superseded by Malachite green, but some were observed in grey during the 2nd World War. If any were repainted in BR days, then plain passenger red would have been applied.
