This is a 7mm scale kit in that it has been designed for fully sprung suspension, and to give the body enough weight to make the springs work, it is in a very thick 28 thou nickel silver. This metal is a joy to solder, it does not seem to cause any problems.
Prototype notes
In 1883, the Midland ordered 40 horseboxes, renewing existing vehicles, but to a new design to Drawing 153. They were also given a new diagram number, 397, and the main differences with existing horseboxes were the vertical end planking replacing horizontal, and the introduction of J hangers on the springs. These could not have been totally successful as auxiliary springs were added from the turn of the last century. However, the overall design was sound and a total of 239 were built as replacements for older horseboxes during the following 5 years, with a further ten (353-362) being capital additions. The second 100 were noted as being fitted with manger troughs, doubtless to ensure that the horses did not overeat!
All bar 18 survived the grouping, and 16 were in service to receive the 1933 renumbering.
A selection of Midland numbers are 50,61,77,106,112,118,157,160, 166,188,193,198,200,250,251,256 and 305. At the grouping, the LMS increased the numbers by 1016, and then in 1933, they were allocated 43437-43452 and 43489-43501, though some were withdrawn immediately to leave the last 16 in service for a few more years.
On construction, they would have been painted in standard Midland NPCS livery, and then updated as the years and fashion dictated. It is also reasonable to assume that standard LMS livery would have been applied to most of the survivors.
