The prototypes of this brake van were introduced in 1912 by the Cambrian Railways and followed the single veranda, wooden vans which were built up to the early 1900s. With a steel underframe, they were very strongly built and survived through the Great Western period until withdrawal under British Railways in the mid 1950’s. In their last days they were to be found on the coast lines of the former Cambrian system, but their workings in Cambrian and Great Western days have so far escaped me. Any help here would be most appreciated and incorporated in these notes to assist others.
They were numbered 9 and 11 in Cambrian days, becoming 8782 and 8794 in 1923.
The Cambrian painted them in their stand grey, with black underframe. Up to 1908, brake van ends were painted vermillion, but it is unlikely that these vans would have received this colour, coming just after it was abandoned. However, this cannot be ascertained definitely. Equally, the CAM (PoW feathers) RYS changed to CAMBRIAN in 1912 and while the latter is more likely, it is quite possible that they were lettered in the former style and not repainted until the grouping due to the First World War. Again, anyone with more definite information is invited to correct the above.
