The prototypes were seen with split spoke, plain spoke and three-hole disk wheels at various times, so you will need to reference a photo. Any 3’1” wheel of these types will suffice. The axle- box castings are sized for the top hat bearings of the common wheel suppliers.

Summary History

51 of these four-wheel tank wagons were built between 1895 and 1911 to Diagram DD3. The 3108 gallon tank barrels were built by the GWR locomotive department. The wagons were intended for carrying oil, creosote and similar liquids for departmental use. Some appear to be having been painted in a Class ‘A’ type livery and used for volatile liquids such as white spirit.

The vehicles lasted a long time, some ending their days in the 1990’s in departmental use in locations such as Crewe, Reading, Hereford and Landore.

There is considerable scope for use of these wagons on layouts covering a wide range of timescales.

A number are preserved with a couple painted in fictitious liveries. It is worth checking the internet for images of these wagons in later life.
