Prototype Notes
A four wheeled, 12’-6” wheelbase unfitted vehicle used to convey drinking water to stations and depots not having their own mains or fresh stream water supply. These vehicles were a common feature in early railway days. They remained in service in some of the more remote outposts of the GWR throughout the first half of the twentieth century. A full tank would be left in a convenient siding so that water could be drawn off as required.
The model is taken from a drawing and photograph of wagon No.DW3l (B.R. Departmental ). From information in Tourret's book on G.W. wagons, diagram numbers DDl and DD2 appear to apply, but one describes a 9' wheelbase, while the other is 13'. As this wagon definitely sealed at 12'6", is it possible that variations occurred? More information would be most appreciated.
The vehicle has double brakes (also known as Independent brakes) with only one V hanger each side.
The sides and ends of the tank were white, but it is possible that no lettering was applied ( ref Tourret Plate 688 ). However some lettering was applied on a trial basis in 1904 (ref. Tourret Plate 302 ) and this was likely to have been a red G W and smaller letters.
After nationalisation, they were painted dark green, with yellow lettering. The underframe was black and I believe that the roof was painted dark grey.
