Summary History
The Luke Longbottom designed, North Staffordshire Railway 'D' Class 0-6-0T locomotive was first introduced in 1883 and was the most abundant class to be found on the NSR. It could be found far and wide over NSR metals and parts of the LNWR over which the NSR had running powers. Construction of all class members was completed by 1899. Beginning in 1900, Mr. Longbottom commenced rebuilding the class with a 4’ 2” diameter boiler. Other alterations included addition of coal rails and an additional footstep adjacent to the front splashers. In time, many examples received deeper cab side sheets and Adams boiler mountings. Rebuilding was complete by 1913. All were absorbed into L.M.S stock with many receiving Ross-pop style replacement safety valves.
Class lasted well into grouping with the final example scrapped in 1937.
